James Joyce's The Dead SHOW MENU

A
nd then she sang. A song I'd never heard. In a voice I'd never known."

This elegantly embroidered musical won critical acclaim and a 2000 Tony Award in its Lincoln Center debut. Presented here in its Community Theatre World Premiere, James Joyce's The Dead exhibits a delicacy and emotional depth unparalleled in musical theatre.

Adapted from Joyce's classic short story, The Dead unfolds one wintry evening in turn-of-the-century Dublin. Two spinster sisters host their annual Christmas party, where three generations gather to exchange memories and good cheer. On this particular night, however, as the merriment and singing continue, a song awakens a memory for one guest and reveals her long-buried passion for a man she loved years before she ever met her husband.

"An incredible feat, turning a masterpiece of a short story into an innovative, irresistible musical." (ABC-TV)

"A remarkably lovely experience!" (Star Ledger)
