Current Mainstage Season

Be the first to see a fully staged production of this World Premiere musical, co-written by Civic Artistic Director Lenny Leibowitz. Part musical folk tale and part love story, the show features a talented cast of African-American performers and a rousing gospel/blues score.
Set in 1930s Virginia, Before the Rain is the story of Jakob Fuller, struggling farmer and soon-to-be father. Staying home from church one fateful Sunday morning, he is visited by a smooth-talking salesman peddling a super-potent fertilizer. Tempted by visions of prosperity, Jakob makes a deal with the man, and soon finds himself engaged in an all-out battle with the devil himself.
With 15 original songs, the show features sultry sirens, graveyard trysts, soulful ballads and spirited gospel tunes.
