Civic casts 40 students in Les Misérables October production of the Broadway smash's School Edition will feature students from 16 Lehigh Valley area schools PURCHASE TICKETS CAST LIST PERFORMANCE CALENDAR & TICKETS
When Les Misérables: School Edition takes the stage Oct. 8 at Civic Theatre of Allentown, it will showcase the musical theater talent of 40 high school students, from 16 Lehigh Valley area schools.
Civic will present the special School Edition of Broadway's second-longest running musical, performed entirely by students. Performances are Oct. 8-23 -- Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. More than 100 young performers auditioned June 13 and 14 for the production. Of those, 40 were cast, representing 12 schools. A list of the cast members and their home schools and home towns is attached. "I couldn't believe the talent of the kids who auditioned," said Civic Theatre Artistic Director William Sanders, who will direct the production. "The casting process was highly competitive, and the talent on display will be spectacular." Civic will employ a 12-member professional orchestra for the production. Veteran musician Pamela Wilt will serve as musical director, and Sanders, a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers (SSDC), will direct and choreograph. Adam Bonanni, a student of the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Performing Arts, will play Jean Valjean, one of the lead roles. A veteran of two Civic Theatre productions, including last season's Jesus Christ Superstar, Bonanni is one of just a few cast members to have appeared before on the Civic stage. "Jean Valjean has been my dream role since forever, and to have the opportunity to perform it as a high school student is just amazing," Bonanni said. " I am really excited at the opportunity to perform at my favorite theatre company in my favorite show." A musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, Les Misérables School Edition is based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo. The Morning Call of Allentown serves as title sponsor of the production. Civic Theatre's mainstage programming is sponsored by The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Service Electric Cable TV and Communications the City of Allentown, and the County of Lehigh.
